Joint pain often worsens when the weather turns cold and damp. Many people notice stiffness, swelling, and discomfort with these conditions, which can disrupt daily activities and reduce quality of life. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a unique perspective on why this happens and suggests natural ways to ease the pain. This post explores the reasons behind joint pain in cold, damp weather and introduces effective TCM treatments, including Evil Bone Water, acupuncture, and moxibustion.
Why Cold Damp Weather Affects Joint Pain
From a TCM point of view, cold and damp weather can invade the body and disrupt the flow of Qi (energy) and Blood in the joints. When this happens, the channels in the joints become blocked, leading to pain and stiffness. This condition is often described as Bi Syndrome, where external factors like Wind, Cold, and Dampness cause obstruction in the meridians.
Cold causes the muscles and tendons to contract, reducing circulation and making joints feel stiff. Dampness adds heaviness and swelling, making movement more difficult. People with existing joint issues, such as arthritis or old injuries, are more vulnerable and often notice symptoms worsen in a cold damp weather.
How TCM Explains Joint Pain in Cold Damp Weather
TCM classifies joint pain caused by weather as a result of external pathogenic factors invading the body. These factors are:
Wind: Causes wandering pain that moves from joint to joint.
Cold: Leads to sharp, fixed pain and stiffness.
Dampness: Brings swelling, heaviness, and a feeling of numbness.
When these factors combine, they block the flow of Qi and blood, which are essential for nourishing the joints. Without smooth circulation, pain and inflammation worsen.

What You Can Do to Help Yourself
TCM offers several practical approaches to relieve joint pain during cold, damp weather. These methods focus on warming the body, removing dampness, and improving circulation.
1. Lifestyle Adjustments
Often simple lifestyle changes can help manage joint pain:
Keeping the area right temeperature and mobile,
First test if the area is cold or hot, if it is hot and red, ice may be applicable. In the abscence of heat two we would always treat with warmth, keeping the joint warm with appropriate clothing holding hot water bottle over it, doing moxa, infrared light, heating plasters.
Avoid prolonged exposure to cold and damp environments
Do gentle stretches, to keep the blood flow to the affected joint.
Massage it with Arnica oil or Evil Bone Water.
Evil Bone Water is a traditional herbal formula designed to dispel cold and dampness from the joints. It often contains warming herbs that penetrate deep into tissues to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Applying Evil Bone Water topically can:
Warm the affected area
Improve blood flow
Reduce stiffness and inflammation
In practice, you can gently massage the affected joints with Evil Bone Water once or twice daily. This treatment is especially helpful before going outdoors in cold weather or after exposure to damp conditions. In my store I have a 10ml Evil Bone roller which is ideal either have with you when out or and apply to sore joint in the morning and evening.
2. Try Acupuncture
During Acupuncture I use specific points along the meridians to unblock Qi and blood flow. For joint pain, acupuncture can:
Relieve pain by stimulating nerve endings
Reduce inflammation
Promote healing of damaged tissues
I often work with patients coming with arthritic joints, wear and tear or injuries. In most cases I work on local points to where the pain is but also using distal points to ie move Qi, tonify deficiency, or dispell cold. Regular sessions during cold seasons can help maintain joint flexibility and reduce flare-ups.
3. Use Moxibustion (Moxa)
Moxibustion is often used in cold and deficient scenarios, it involves burning dried mugwort (moxa) near the skin to warm and stimulate acupuncture points. This warming therapy is effective for cold and damp-related joint pain because it:
Warms the meridians and dispels cold
Enhances circulation in the joints
Strengthens the body's resistance to cold
There is different moxa applications, directly on the points/areas or inderectly over the area. It is often combined with acupuncture for better results.
